Despite COVID-19 shutting down almost the entire world, people are still experiencing stress–even more stress than when our lives were fast-paced and hectic!
How do you deal with overwhelming stress?
I have had my fair share of stress lately! Divorce, death, job insecurity, a son deployed in the military–all at once.
Here are a few ways that have helped me tremendously:
1. Give yourself grace to not be okay.
This is really important. I can’t tell how many times I have heard people say that I am really hard on myself. Being hard on yourself simply creates more stress. Take it from me–don’t do this. Give yourself grace!
2. Turn to Scripture.
Never underestimate the power of God’s Word. There is POWER in that Book! Find a verse that speaks to you and your situation, write it down on a 3×5 card so you can carry it around with you.
Read it often, and believe God’s promises to you. You’ll be amazed at “the peace that passeth all understanding” that comes to you!
3. Move your body.
Have you ever wondered why they are called “e-motions”? According to Tony Robbins, you can change your emotions if you change your motion.
For me, this has been very true, especially if I take my movement outdoors. Something about going for a brisk walk in nature, or a bike ride, or a run that makes me feel so much better! Give it a try next time you’re feeling stressed!

4. Get plenty of rest.
I have found that while I am going through these times of multiple, extreme stressors, that I need more sleep. If you are like me, and feel the urge to nap or sleep in, by all means, listen to your body.
Extra sleep is imperative to your mental, emotional, and physical health.
It’s okay to sleep more when you are stressed!
5. Make sure you are eating well.
I know. It’s a no-brainer to pay attention to your nutrition. But sometimes we need reminded!
If you are in a season of life where you don’t have time to prepare meals from scratch, make sure that the foods you are buying are the healthiest options you can afford.
Skip the high-fat, high-sugar fast foods. Instead, reach for bananas. These are filling, healthy “fast” foods.
Other quick options are: tuna in foil packets, raw nuts, other fresh fruits and veggies that you can take on-the-go.
We are living in an unprecedented time! It’s okay to not be okay!
Practice these five simple stress-reducing steps and let me know if they help!
